The cultures, languages, and heritage of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples are fundamental to the identity of Canada. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting the preservation, promotion, and revitalization of Indigenous cultures and to working in partnership with Indigenous peoples to ensure their traditions and stories are shared and celebrated. Our efforts are part of our broader commitment to reconciliation and to building a renewed relationship based on respect and recognition of rights.
Indigenous languages are a vital part of Indigenous identity and culture. Many of these languages are at risk, and we are committed to supporting their revitalization through the Indigenous Languages Act. We provide funding and support to Indigenous communities and organizations to develop language learning resources, support immersion programs, and record the stories of Elders. Our goal is to ensure that Indigenous languages are spoken and passed down to future generations.
Indigenous artists and creators bring unique perspectives and talent to the Canadian cultural landscape. We provide funding and support for Indigenous arts across all disciplines, including visual arts, music, dance, and film. We also support Indigenous media organizations that provide important news and stories from an Indigenous perspective. By investing in Indigenous creativity, we help ensure that Indigenous voices are heard and that their artistic achievements are celebrated by all Canadians.
We work with Indigenous communities to protect and preserve their heritage sites, artifacts, and traditional knowledge. This involves supporting community-led projects to document and share their history and ensuring that Indigenous perspectives are reflected in our national museums and historic sites. We also work to repatriate Indigenous cultural property and ancestral remains, a key part of our commitment to reconciliation and respect for Indigenous sovereignty.
Recognizing the contributions and achievements of Indigenous peoples is an important part of our national story. We support various initiatives and events that celebrate Indigenous excellence in all fields, from the arts and sciences to leadership and community service. These celebrations help foster greater understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures and remind all Canadians of the vibrant and enduring presence of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in our country.
