What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online immigration application management system that IRCC uses to manage applications for permanent residence from skilled workers. It was launched in January 2015.

The system uses a points-based ranking system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to assess and rank candidates based on factors like age, education, work experience, and language skills.

Highest-scoring candidates are invited to apply for permanent residence through regular "draws" from the pool. Successful applicants can become permanent residents within 6 months of submitting a complete application.

Three Programs Under Express Entry

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

For skilled workers with foreign work experience. Requires at least 1 year of continuous full-time skilled work experience.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

For skilled tradespeople with qualifying offers of employment or certificates of qualification.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For temporary foreign workers and international students who have gained Canadian work experience.

Check if you qualify under FSWP, FSTP, or CEC. Use IRCC's "Come to Canada" wizard to confirm.

2
Gather Documents

Prepare language test results (IELTS/CELPIP/TEF), educational credential assessments (ECA), and reference letters.

3
Create Express Entry Profile

Submit your profile online at IRCC's website. You'll receive a CRS score and be placed in the pool.

4
Receive ITA

Wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) during a draw. Higher CRS scores are invited first.

After receiving ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application with all documents.
