Public safety is a core priority for the Government of Canada, encompassing a wide range of activities aimed at protecting Canadians from crime, natural disasters, and other emergencies. We work with all levels of government, Indigenous communities, and international partners to ensure a safe and resilient Canada. Our efforts are coordinated through Public Safety Canada, which provides national leadership on issues ranging from emergency management and law enforcement to border security and crime prevention.

Emergency Management and Response

Preparing for and responding to natural disasters and other emergencies is a key part of public safety. We work to enhance Canada's resilience through the National Emergency Management Strategy, which focuses on risk assessment, prevention, mitigation, and recovery. In the event of a major emergency, we coordinate the federal response and provide assistance to provinces and territories. This includes deploying the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Coast Guard to support local responders and provide specialized expertise.

Law Enforcement and Crime Prevention

We work to keep our communities safe by supporting effective law enforcement and investing in crime prevention initiatives. This includes the work of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), our national police service, which provides federal policing across the country and contract policing in most provinces and territories. We also provide funding and support for community-led projects that address the root causes of crime and help at-risk individuals build positive futures.

Border Security and Integrity

Protecting our borders is essential for public safety and national security. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) manages the flow of people and goods into Canada, ensuring that those who pose a threat are prevented from entering. We also work to prevent the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and other dangerous goods across our borders. Our efforts are focused on balancing the need for security with the importance of legitimate travel and trade, which are vital for our economy.

Countering Violent Extremism

Addressing the threat of violent extremism is a critical component of public safety. We work to prevent radicalization to violence by engaging with communities, supporting research, and implementing programs that challenge extremist ideologies. Our approach is based on the National Strategy on Counter-Terrorism and emphasizes the importance of early intervention and community-based support. By working together, we can build a more inclusive and resilient society that is better protected from the threat of violent extremism.
