Canada is home to a vast and diverse array of wildlife and plant species, many of which are unique to our northern climate. Protecting this biological diversity is essential for the health of our ecosystems and the well-being of future generations. The Government of Canada is committed to the conservation and protection of species at risk and their habitats across the country.

Protecting Species at Risk

The Species at Risk Act (SARA) provides the legal framework for protecting species in danger of disappearance from Canada. We work with provinces, territories, Indigenous peoples, and other partners to identify at-risk species and develop recovery strategies and action plans. These efforts focus on restoring populations and protecting the critical habitats they need to survive and thrive.

Conservation of Migratory Birds

As a key partner in international bird conservation, Canada protects hundreds of species of migratory birds under the Migratory Birds Convention Act. We monitor bird populations, manage migratory bird sanctuaries, and work with other countries to ensure the protection of birds throughout their annual life cycles. These efforts are crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting recreational activities like birdwatching.

Habitat Protection and Restoration

Healthy habitats are the foundation of biodiversity. We manage a vast network of national wildlife areas and migratory bird sanctuaries that protect critical ecosystems. We also support community-led conservation projects through programs like the Habitat Stewardship Program, which provides funding for the protection and restoration of habitats on private land and in Indigenous communities.

Invasive Alien Species

Invasive species pose a significant threat to Canada's native wildlife and plants. We work to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species through rigorous monitoring and management programs. By protecting our ecosystems from these threats, we help maintain the natural balance of our environment and protect the industries that depend on healthy ecosystems, such as forestry and agriculture.
