LMIA-Based Permit

Employer must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) proving no Canadian worker was available for the role.

Certain categories (intra-company transfers, free-trade agreements, significant benefit) do not require an LMIA.

Application Process — Step by Step

1
Get a Job Offer

Find a Canadian employer willing to sponsor you. The employer may need to obtain an LMIA before you can apply.

2
Employer Submits LMIA

For most positions, the employer applies to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) for an LMIA to confirm no Canadian worker is available.

3
Receive Job Offer Letter

Once approved, the employer issues a formal Job Offer Letter and/or LMIA number which you will need for your application.

4
Apply for Work Permit

Submit your work permit application online through the IRCC portal. Include all supporting documents and pay the processing fee.

5
Biometrics & Medical

If required, attend a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) and complete a medical exam.

If approved, you'll receive your work permit. Present it at the port of entry when arriving in Canada.
