Before you travel outside of Canada, it is essential to check the travel advice and advisories for your destination. The Government of Canada provides up-to-date information on safety and security, entry and exit requirements, health conditions, and local laws and culture for more than 200 destinations worldwide. These advisories are designed to help you make informed decisions and travel safely.

Safety and Security Levels

We use four levels of risk to describe the safety and security situation in a country or region: Exercise normal security precautions, Exercise a high degree of caution, Avoid non-essential travel, and Avoid all travel. These levels are based on an assessment of risks such as crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and natural disasters. You should always follow the advice provided for each level to ensure your safety and that of your traveling companions.

Entry and Exit Requirements

Every country has its own rules for who can enter and how long they can stay. We provide information on the types of visas or travel authorizations you may need, passport validity requirements, and any specific entry rules related to health or security. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet all the requirements for your destination and any countries you may be transiting through.

Health and Vaccination Information

Traveling to different parts of the world can expose you to various health risks. We provide information on recommended vaccinations, common illnesses in your destination, and the quality of local medical facilities. We also offer guidance on travel insurance and what to do if you become ill or injured while abroad. Checking these health advisories well in advance of your trip will help you take the necessary precautions to stay healthy.

Local Laws and Culture

When you are in another country, you are subject to its local laws. What may be legal in Canada could be illegal elsewhere, and penalties can be severe. We provide information on local laws and customs to help you avoid legal issues and respect the culture of your destination. This includes information on rules regarding drugs, alcohol, photography, and dress codes. Being aware of and respecting local norms is an important part of being a responsible traveler.
